Job Description

Job Description

Workers’ Compensation Associate | Richmond, VA (Hybrid) | $95,000 to $150,000

\n

\n

When did you last see your own name on an appellate brief in a comp case?

\n

\n

At the firm I’m recruiting for in Richmond, appellate briefs are written into the job description. So are arbitrations, expert witnesses and trial prep.

\n

\n

I’m hiring a workers’ compensation associate with 2 or more years for my client’s Richmond office. You’ll run a varied caseload from the day the file opens to the day it resolves, working closely with partners and directly with clients.

\n

\n

The numbers, up front

\n
    \n
  • $95,000 to $150,000. The firm is open to two levels: an associate with two or three years of comp toward the lower end, and someone already running a full hearing docket and handling appeals toward the top.
  • \n
  • 1,950 billable hours a year. The firm states it plainly, so nothing about your first review comes as a surprise.
  • \n
  • The role is listed as hybrid, though the firm notes arrangements depend on the role and the office.
  • \n
\n

\n

The work

\n
    \n
  • Reviewing and analyzing claims from your first look at the file.
  • \n
  • Representing clients at hearings, arbitrations and depositions. Regularly, not occasionally.
  • \n
  • Writing with some weight to it: briefs, memos, pleadings and appellate briefs.
  • \n
  • Drafting discovery and answering it.
  • \n
  • Choosing the experts and working with them.
  • \n
  • Preparing for trial, then being there for it.
  • \n
\n

\n

You’ll need

\n
    \n
  • A JD from an ABA accredited law school.
  • \n
  • An active Virginia license. Another bar admission is a bonus.
  • \n
  • 2 or more years of workers’ compensation.
  • \n
  • Experience with administrative hearings, depositions and mediations.
  • \n
  • Research and writing you’re proud of, and the advocacy to match it out loud.
  • \n
  • The habit of returning an adjuster’s call the same day without anyone reminding you.
  • \n
\n

\n
