You'll work on structural steel and industrial projects, putting your skills to use on everything from connecting and welding steel to rigging, fitting, and installing structural components. We value experienced tradespeople, provide the equipment and training needed for the job, and offer opportunities to grow into Foreman and Superintendent positions.

At SCSE, safety is everyone's responsibility. Every crew member has the authority to stop unsafe work, and no one gets in trouble for speaking up about a safety concern.

Why Join SCSE?

  • Competitive pay: Earn $20–$55 per hour based on experience.
  • Weekly pay and overtime: Get paid every week, with time-and-a-half overtime after 40 hours.
  • Year-round work: Stay busy with structural steel erection and industrial projects.
  • Home most nights: Most jobs are within daily driving distance of Fort Wayne.
  • Career advancement: Build your skills and work toward becoming a Foreman or Superintendent.
  • Training provided: No certifications are required at hire. We'll help you obtain the qualifications needed for your work.
  • Tools and equipment supplied: We provide power tools, PPE, and rigging equipment.
  • Safety-first culture: We expect everyone to look out for one another and stop work when something isn't safe.

We own our equipment fleet and self-perform our work, giving our crews the resources they need to get the job done right.

Pay & Benefits

  • Overtime at 1.5 times your regular rate after 40 hours worked.
  • Weekly pay.
  • Per diem for qualifying travel work.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Profit-sharing opportunities.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Company-provided power tools, PPE, and rigging.
  • Training and certifications provided.

Please note: Employees are responsible for bringing their own hand tools.

What You'll Do

As a Structural Steel Ironworker, you'll help safely and efficiently erect structural steel on construction sites and inside industrial facilities.

Steel Erection & Installation

  • Unload, sort, and stage steel materials so crews can work efficiently.
  • Connect and install columns, beams, joists, and bracing.
  • Bolt structural steel according to project drawings and specifications, including snug-tight, pretensioned, and slip-critical connections.
  • Weld structural steel in the field.
  • Plumb and align steel as the structure is erected.
  • Install platforms, stairs, handrails, metal decking, and miscellaneous steel.

Rigging, Fabrication & Industrial Work

  • Rig loads and signal crane operators during lifting operations.
  • Torch-cut, fit, and repair steel in industrial mills and plants.
  • Assist with equipment installation and other structural steel work as needed.
  • Review current erection drawings, connection details, and piece marks before installing materials.
  • Identify damaged, incorrect, or missing materials and report issues rather than forcing an improper fit.

Safety & Teamwork

  • Participate in daily safety meetings and job hazard planning.
  • Use required fall protection and maintain 100% tie-off when working at height, in accordance with site requirements.
  • Stop work and report unsafe conditions.
  • Follow project drawings, specifications, and established safety and quality standards.
  • Help train apprentices and support other crew members.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for dependable, safety-conscious ironworkers who have the technical skills and hands-on experience to contribute from day one.

Required qualifications:

  • At least 4 years of structural steel erection experience or completion of an ironworker apprenticeship.
  • Working skills in structural steel connecting and bolt-up, structural welding, rigging and signaling, and torch cutting and fitting.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment welding test.
  • Ability to read erection drawings, connection details, and piece marks.
  • Own hand tools appropriate for the work.
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and residence within approximately two hours of Fort Wayne.

No certifications are required at hire. We provide training for certifications needed to perform the work.

Preferred Qualifications

These are a plus, but not required:

  • Experience working inside steel mills or heavy industrial plants.
  • AWS D1.1 welding certification.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 training.
  • Rigger or signal person training.
  • Aerial lift, telehandler, or forklift training.
  • First aid and CPR certification.
  • English and Spanish communication skills.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on field position working on active construction sites and inside operating mills and industrial plants.

  • Work outdoors in all seasons and in environments with heat, cold, noise, and dust.
  • Work at heights on structural steel using required fall protection and PPE.
  • Climb, balance, and perform tasks at elevation.
  • Repeatedly lift and handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Follow jobsite safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment.

A pre-employment drug screen and background check are required. A driving record check is required for employees who drive a company vehicle.
